From Lorde to Beyonce, it seems like every celebrity is wearing deep berry coloured lip shades right now. While many women are nervous about wearing such a bold colour, the truth is anyone can rock this look. A great trick for looking polished even when you’re hardly wearing makeup, here are our tips for making berry lips work.
Start with the right shade
There are four basic undertones to berry coloured lipsticks these are: pink, brown, blue, and red.
If you’re light-eyed, pink-based burgundy colours will look amazing on you. This hue makes your eyes pop.
If you have dark eyes a brown burgundy will bring them out more.
A blue-based burgundy on the other hand, isn’t too light or too dark, so it can be worn by women with light or dark eye colours.
For a deep red burgundy is more suited for brunettes because their hair balances out and can support the intense colour.
Always take the colour for a test drive
After you’ve determined you like the shade, try it on to see if it brightens your face or makes you look tired. If it lights up your complexion, that’s the shade for you.
Use your toothbrush to gently brush your lips to exfoliate any dead skin, as any rough surface on your lips will appear magnified with dark lipstick. After exfoliating, use a balm to smooth your lips.
Use a lipbrush
Don’t apply a bold berry lip straight from the tube. You get a much better finish using a lip brush. Use a lip pencil in the same shade to colour in the whole lip (not just the outline). Then apply a lipstick over the top of the lip pencil for long wearing colour.
Reshape your lips
Bold colours accentuate the shape of your lips so don’t be afraid to create a more symmetrical lip line. It’s okay to colour a little outside the lines. Use your lip brush or pencil to even out your lips for a symmetrical shape.
Blot & reapply
For a long wearing berry lip, blot your lipstick with a tissue and apply a light second coat of lipstick. Some colours need more care than others, so pack a mirror in your hand bag.
Keep the rest natural
With such a bold lip it’s best to keep the rest of your face simple. A light foundation matched with a lick of mascara is all you need to complete the look.
