KEVIN.MURPHY

Developed by superstar stylist Kevin Murphy, our KEVIN.MURPHY luxury hair care and styling range is proudly sulphate and paraben free, made from sustainable resources, using pure essential oils, plant extracts and natural antioxidants. They are also certified by PETA as cruelty free, with all packaging made from recycled ocean waste plastics.

In 2018, KEVIN.MURPHY made the decision to manufacture their bottles with 100% Ocean Waste Plastic (OWP). “China used to accept waste from all over the world, but now they no longer accept it, so the waste goes to developing countries who can’t afford not to take it, and have no solutions to deal with it. As a result, eight million tons of plastic are dumped into our oceans every year, which equates to 150 million tons of plastic littering our oceans” Kevin says.

Because of this devastating truth, they made the decision to move to a more responsible manufacturing platform. Beginning with the cult product Angel Wash, KEVIN.MURPHY is aiming for all bottles to be made from 100% OWP by 2020. Every time you choose a package that is made from OWP versus virgin plastic, it’s the equivalent of removing 3-4 plastic bags from the ocean.

We can vouch that Kevin’s quest to be green hasn’t come at the expense of quality. His range of salon-only hair care products was created by Kevin to meet his needs as an editorial hairstylist. Inspired by the philosophy of skin care, the luxurious KEVIN.MURPHY range of shampoos, conditioners, treatments and styling aids, caters for every hair type.

What are Parabens? Why We Only Stock Paraben-Free Products

download.png

What is a paraben?

Parabens are a class of compounds called esters (basically, preservatives) used in all sorts of beauty products. They are very effective at preventing bacteria, fungi, and yeast growth, all of which can cause beauty products to go bad.

The typical parabens used in cosmetics and haircare include methyl-, ethyl-, butyl-, and propylparaben. Most paraben-containing products include more than one paraben to protect against a broad range of microorganisms and extend the product’s shelf life.

Why are people concerned about parabens?

paraben-allergy-min.jpg

Parabens have a chemical structure resembling that of estrogen (the female hormone). A 2004 study found that parabens were found in breast cancer tumors, indicating a possible link between the compounds and cancer. Further, since parabens mimic estrogen in our bodies, they’re potential disruptors to our hormones, including our reproductive systems.

The EU makes a distinction between the safety of parabens; sorter-chain parabens, like methylparabens, are less concerning since they’re water soluble and don’t penetrate the skin. The oil or lipid soluble, longer-chain parabens, like isobutyl- and butylparabens however, can penetrate the skin and accumulate in our bodies’ fat deposits, which may lead to problems.

What can we do?

While there is no conclusive evidence that parabens pose a health risk, many beauty brands have chosen to stay on the safe side and go paraben free.

At Reds we feel strongly about promoting and protecting the health of our clients, staff, and the environment. Every product we use has been handpicked for its sulphate, paraben and cruelty free credentials, as well as its efficacy. We proudly stock KEVIN.MURPHY and Eleven hair care and styling products, which have both made the commitment to go completely paraben free.

We can vouch that these brand’s commitment to go paraben free hasn’t come at the expense of quality – or shelf life! You can rest assured that these salon-only, professional, luxury hair care and styling ranges will give you great hair and not risk your health in the process.

How To Care For Naturally Frizzy Hair

Frizz can be caused by so many different things, from humidity, to the wrong hair cut, to over-cleansing. While permanent Keratin straightening treatments are available, when it comes to hair, we’re all about loving what you’ve got. So, if your looking to embrace your naturally frizzy texture, read on!

More moisture = less frizz

If you’re looking for a smoother finish, make sure you only wash your hair a couple of times a week and use gentle, moisturising shampoos which don’t strip your hair of vital moisture. We love KEVIN.MURPHY’s Hydrate Me wash and Eleven’s Smooth Me Now shampoo. Adding a mask, serum, or treatment into your routine – like KEVIN.MURPHY smooth again – will also boost your hair’s moisture and manageability.

Air dry vs blow-dry

A huge debate when it comes to frizz is whether blow-drying or air-drying gives smoother results, and the answer usually varies from person to person.

When blowdrying naturally frizzy hair, use a smoothing nozzle on your hairdryer and always finish with the cool shot to smooth down the cuticle. Investing in some great products to protect your hair from heat damage and maximise smoothing, like KEVIN.MURPHY’s Untangled leave in conditioner, will make a real difference to your hair’s texture and will extend the life of your style.

If you prefer to air-dry, add a smoothing product, like Eleven’s Frizz Control shaping cream and style your hair with a wide-toothed comb while it’s still wet so that it dries smooth, rather than trying to shape it once it’s dry.

Don’t brush your hair

Or rather, try not to brush it too much. Over-brushing can damage your ends and cause them to frizz. Synthetic bristles can also cause static and frizz.

Always comb your hair while still wet, then style with a boar bristle brush to help prevent breakage and frizz.

If your hair starts to go frizzy halfway through the day, add a little smoothing product and re-smooth using your boar bristle brush and hairdryer.

Why You Should Use a Sulphate-Free Shampoo

As we become more conscious about the ingredients in our beauty products, more and more of us are turning to sulphate-free shampoos. Like many other commonly-found chemicals, sulphates have been relegated to the beauty ingredient blacklist.

What are sulphates?

Sulphates are either derived from natural sources or synthetically produced. Sodium lauryl sulphate or SLS, one of the most common types of sulphates, can be made from plant sources such as coconut oil or palm kernel oil. But they can also be synthesised from non-renewable petroleum sources.

What do sulphates do?

Sulphates are surfactants — compounds that attract both oil and water. One end of a surfactant’s molecule is attracted to water and the other end is attracted to oil. This property allows surfactants to strip dirt and oil from your body.

Aside from lifting dirt and grease, they also give products the ability to lather. Foam isn’t really necessary for cleaning, but since the addition of sulphates, people have come to associate suds with getting clean.

The inclusion of sulphates in shampoo makes it deliciously foamy. However, it also strips moisture from the scalp and strands, which may be why you find yourself needing to pack on the conditioner and hair masques afterwards. Sulphates are particularly bad news for coloured hair, as the cleansing agent can strip the colour pigments from the hair fibre, causing fading and loss of vibrancy.

Are they safe?

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel says that sulphates are safe for use in cosmetics. However, a study published in the International Journal of Toxicology  found “severe epidermal changes” on the areas of the skin (of mice) on which SLS was applied. The study concludes that both Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate (ALS) may only be safe in products that will be in contact with skin briefly, at a concentration of less than 1%, and will be followed by thorough rinsing.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) can also cause irritation of the skin, eyes, and lungs, which we have all experienced with the sting of getting shampoo in our eyes.

What are the alternatives?

Our KEVIN.MURPHY and ELEVEN hair care and styling ranges are 100% sulphate free. Plant-derived sources create rich luxurious lathers that cleanse hair while preventing stripping of moisture and colour. We love our sulphate-free washes and we’re sure you will too. Give one a go and see if you’re convinced!

How To Prevent Tangles

Screen Shot 2018-11-05 at 11.52.15 AM.png

Image via Instagram/elevenaustalia

Are your stands unwilling to part ways? Here’s a look at what causes hair tangling, how to deal with it and ultimately how to prevent it.

The Causes of Tangles

1. Lack Of Hydration

When your hair lacks moisture, the outer layers of your hair shaft break, resulting in rough and damaged stands that catch each other more easily.

2. Sleeping With Your Hair Down

Sleeping without braiding or tying your hair up can lead to some serious tangles. Another major no-no is going to bed with wet hair. Hair is most fragile when it is wet and as the tangles dry they shrink and tighten, making them a nightmare to remove.

3. Untrimmed Dry Ends

Going long periods without trimming your hair results in dry and split ends. Dry ends also tend to break easily. And once your hair splits, it cannot be repaired. Dry, frizzy strands and split ends tangle much more easily than healthy hair.

5. Damaged Cuticles

Regular heat styling without heat protection can damage your hair’s outer cuticle, leaving the inner hair shaft exposed, unprotected and vulnerable to tangles.

How To Untangle Hair

Screen Shot 2018-11-05 at 11.53.52 AM.png

Image via Instagram/elevenaustralia

  1. Apply a moisturising product like Eleven’s Miracle Hair Cream to smoothen the hair cuticle. This stuff really is a game changer when dealing with dry, knotty hair!
  2. Allow the detangling product to soak into the hair for a few minutes before you start detangling.
  3. Divide your hair into manageable sections.
  4. Use your fingers to detach the knots before using a wide-toothed comb. This can reduce the size of the knots substantially and make detangling less painful.
  5. Use your comb to detangle the ends first, working your way up to the roots.

How To Prevent Tangles

1. Condition

Always use a moisture-locking conditioner after washing your hair. Conditioner smooths the hair shaft and softens dry strands. For dry or damaged hair let the product sit in your tresses for a couple of minutes before rinsing.

2. Use A Wide-Toothed Comb on Wet Hair

Wet hair is much more fragile. Brushes and fine combs can tear open the shafts of wet hair. Instead, use a wide-toothed comb to gently remove knots.

3. Apply Hair Masks

3min.jpg

Image via Instagram/elevenaustralia

Applying a hair mask once a week can improve your hair texture drastically. Treatments like Eleven’s Three Minute Repair, hydrate and smooth your dry cuticles, leaving your locks silky and soft.

4. Rinse With Cold Water

This is a simple yet effective step. Rinse your locks with cold water at the end of your shower to close your cuticles and prevent any breakage. Doing so also keeps rough and dry strands at bay.

5. Always Use a Heat Protectant

45219137_2161140690587181_2695118435238543360_n.jpg

Image via Instagram/lovekevinmurphy

Heat styling tools like blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can take a toll on your delicate locks. To avoid damage always apply a heat protectant like KEVIN MURPHY’s new Heated.Defense before styling and use the tools on low to medium heat settings.

6. Go Easy With The Towel

Twisting and rubbing your hair with a towel immediately after a shower can cause damage. Instead, gently squeeze your hair with a towel and let it air dry. Microfibre towels are a great way to dry hair quickly and gently.

7. Invest in a Silk Pillowcase

If you wake up ever morning with knots, try investing in a silk pillowcase. Silk doesn’t cause friction and can prevent tangles. If tangles are a problem avoid cotton pillowcases – their rough texture can dry out and break your hair.

8. Avoid Products Containing Sulphates and Alcohol

Although there is a wide range of products that claim to be natural, it is vital to look for the ones that are true to their claim. Look for products that are free of sulphates and alcohols that dry out and damage the hair cuticle, leading to tangling and breakage.

Why Brassy Hair Happens – And How To Fix It!

Screen Shot 2018-09-09 at 7.54.53 PM.png

Image via Instagram/elevenaustralia

Brassy hair happens to almost everyone with lightened hair, but the good news is, there are ways to reduce brass when it appears, and to avoid unwanted warmth in the first place.

So why does it happen?

Everyone’s hair has warmth lurking within – you may not see it, but it’s there. When your natural colour is removed by lightening, the underlying brassy tones of your hair are revealed. Colourists manage this by mixing colour and toning formulas that contain blue and purple tones to cancel out the unwanted reds and yellows that lightening exposes.

Once you leave the salon there are many other factors which can contribute to your strands becoming yellow over time.

Exposure to the elements

Oxidising is defined simply as the addition of oxygen. When hair colour is exposed to oxygen it begins to oxidise and fade. UV rays also contribute by damaging our hair and drying it out. When strands are damaged like this they become more porous, making your colour fade faster. When colour fades, it tends to reveal the underlying warm pigment in your hair.

The pool

Pools are infused with chlorine to kill nasty bacteria, however the chlorine solution used in pool is also a form of bleach. Bleach removes colour, and unfortunately that includes your hair. And when your hair lightens, those warm tones start peeping through.

Your shower

You may not realise it, but the water coming out of the shower head in your bathroom could be making your hair brassy! That is, if it has a high level of mineral deposits. This type of water can cause build-up in your hair, which then dries it out and makes it prone to damage. Hard water not only leaves mineral deposits in the hair, but it also prevents the penetration and absorption of moisture.

Your hair products
Your shampoo could be helping to turn those strands brassy. Some shampoos strip your hair colour and contain parabens and sulphates that actually damage your hair and contribute to brassiness.

How to fight brassy tones

First and foremost, if you should leave lightening to the professionals. Our colourists are professionally trained to understand how your hair will respond to lightening and how to lighten your hair without exposing your hair’s warm tones.

Once you leave the salon, the best way to maintain your blonde is with a special shampoo and conditioner designed for lightened hair. These violet-toned shampoos and conditioners counteract brassiness by cancelling out golds and reds with blues and purples. And don’t be alarmed by its purple shade – it is not going to do any damage to your mane, or dye your hair lavender!

We love KEVIN.MURPHY’s Blonde Angel Wash and Rinse, and Eleven’s Keep My Colour blonde shampoo and conditioner. Both ranges nourish your hair with naturally-derived ingredients and are paraben and sulphate free. And as an added bonus both are also certified cruelty free!

Reds Guide to Thick Hair

Screen Shot 2018-08-20 at 4.36.59 PM.png

image via Instagram/lovekevinmurphy

Thick hair is often viewed as the ideal hair type, but those who were born with a full head of thick, luscious locks are definitely familiar with the struggle of managing their mane. If you’re struggling with the upkeep of thick hair, not to worry, here’s our Reds guide for everything you need to know.

Add Layers

Adding layers is one of the easiest ways to make thick-hair more manageable. Adding layers gives the hair natural body and movement and also thins out the hair to help tame it and give it shape.

Use Hydrating Products

Thick hair tends to be dryer, so it’s important to use products that keep your hair hydrated and avoid frizz.

Look out for products and treatments that are specifically designed for dry hair. We love KEVIN.MURPHY’s HYDRATE-ME range, which uses premium-quality, natural ingredients to naturally hydrate, smooth and moisturise your hair while also adding elasticity and shine.

And adding an at home masque to your routine once a week, like KEVIN.MURPHY’s HYDRATE-ME. MASQUE or Eleven’s Three Minute Repair Rinse, will help you to avoid stubborn flyaways and frizz.

Invest in Your Heat Stylers

Ever wonder why professional heat styling tools cost so much more than your run of the mill department store brand or why your hair always looks that much smoother and shinier when you leave the salon? It’s because your hair stylist has invested in higher grade heat styling tools, which you should too! Reds stocks a range of premium heat styling tools which will take your style to the next level, without damaging your hair in the process.

The Best Hair Accessory

One of the biggest struggles for women with thick hair is having the right hair accessories to be able to successfully and beautifully style it. If you struggle with achieving a high bun or ponytail because of your heavy, thick hair, try out the Invisibobble hair ties. These hair ties are made with a telephone cord like spiral, which give the band extreme hold but maximum comfort—perfect for thick hair!
