How To: Caring for Brightly Coloured Hair

Given the continuing trend for brightly coloured locks, here’s our guide to keeping your colour looking vibrant and healthy.

Prevent Damage

Bright shades require a very light base hair colour, which usually means that your hair needs to be lightened. It’s important to maintain the health of your hair as much as possible before going bright. Super-porous, brittle hair does not hold onto colour well. So maintain the health of your hair and the longevity of your colour, by asking your stylist to use Olaplex when lightening your hair.  Olaplex is a protein bond builder which is added to the lightening mixture to avoid damage when lightening.

Each time you wash your hair colour can fade – especially when not using a colour protecting shampoo. Stretch out time between washes with a dry shampoo like Kérastase Powder Buff and when washing use a shampoo designed specifically for coloured hair like L’Oreal Vitamino Colour.

Pro tip: When washing your hair, use tepid to cool water. This helps to keep the hairshaft closed, meaning that you’r less likely to lose colour when you wash.

A heat protectant like Kérastase Ciment Thermique will help to maintain the health of your hair and the vibrancy of your colour. UV rays also fade hair colour. The Kérastase Soliel range is specifically designed for sun worshippers to protect the health of colour-treated heat-exposed hair.

Trending for Men: Beach Blonde

Taking cue from male celebrities, the latest trend in male hair colour has arrived: bleached blonde. This new trend gives a vintage feel to contemporary styles reminiscent of the ’80s and ’90s, and makes a bold statement to any man willing to take the plunge. Thinking about going blonde? Read on to find out how to achieve your the best blonde for you.

1. Your professional Reds colourist is trained to find the right blonde for your skin tone and lighten your hair without creating permanent damage. With so many factors at play when lightening your hair, avoid a hair disaster and leave this job to the professionals.

2. If you’re feeling adventurous ask your Reds colourist for a bold, 90’s rock band look. If you’re looking for something a little softer ask your colourist for a more natural, sun-drenched colour.

3. To keep your colour from fading or going brassy, use a specially formulated shampoo and conditioner for blonde hair like L’Oréal Professionnel Shine Blonde or L’Oréal Professionnel Silver.

4. Maintain your hair health in between salon visits with a deep conditioning mask like Kérastase Masque Chroma Riche for dry, highlighted hair and Kevin Murphy’s nourishing and blonde enhancing Shimmer Me Blonde spray.

Men’s Styling Products Decoded: What they are and how to use them

HAIR STYLING MIGHT seem straightforward, but men often struggle to get the look they want at home. This is usually because of a lack of knowledge about styling products and how to use them.

No two stylers work the same way, especially when applied to different hair types, lengths, or densities. There’s greater complexity yet when product is applied to dry hair vs. towel-dried, damp hair.

Blow-Wave 101: How To Use a Diffuser

With a noticeable move away from the dead-straight look of previous years, curls are definitely making a comeback. And if you have some natural waves or curl to your hair can look amazing with a little help from a hairdryer attachment called a diffuser.

Now, if your hair is truly straight, a diffuser won’t magically make it curl, but so many of us unknowingly really do have the potential for gorgeous, curly hair.

The magic is all in the diffuser and proper technique. Here’s our how to guide:

  1. After washing and conditioning, comb any knots out with a wide toothed comb.
  2. Gently press excess water out of your hair with a towel.Make sure to towel-dry it well, but never wait until parts of your hair have already dried to begin blow drying. These dry pieces will just become fly-aways and will result in your finished product looking frizzy.
  3. Scrunch in a styling product specially designed to enhance curls like Kérastase Curl Fever.
  4. Always start your diffusing process at the ends and work upwards as the hair dries. This allows the curls to spring up without the weight of the water pulling them down. To avoid creating fly-aways, make sure to always keep the nozzle of the dryer horizontal, not vertical.
  5. If your hair is long or medium-length, it’s best to start upside-down, then switch from side to side as you get closer to the roots. Make sure NEVER to comb through with your fingers while you’re drying! Only use your hands to lift the ends of the hair and take the weight off the curls as they are drying. Some gentle scrunching is OK.
  6. As you get to the roots, use your hands to make a “claw” then make small circles on your scalp with your fingertips. This encourages the curl and volume all the way to the roots. If you have a diffuser with “fingers” like the Cloud Nine Airshot Diffuser, you can actually press these points directly against the scalp and make circles as you hang your hair to one side and then the other.
  7. Once your hair is dry, grab your wide-tooth comb and loosely work it through your hair. This will gently separate and soften the curls to create a modern finish. Just remember to do this AFTER the hair is completely dry or you’ll create the dreaded frizz effect.

A diffuser works like a sprinkler on the end of a garden hose; it breaks down and separates the air enough that the heat can pass through your curls and dry them without breaking them up. This is the secret to the perfect soft, springy curl. But, it’s important to know that not all diffusers are created equal.

To test if your diffuser will create the soft, springy curls you want, hold it about 15cm from your hair and turn the dryer on. If the diffuser blows your hair like a jet engine, it’s just going to create frizz. But, if it sends a gentle breeze though your hair, you have a winner!

How To Care For Your Colour

A new hair colour always looks amazing, but some people struggle to keep their colour looking fresh between colouring. So here’s our guide to keeping your colour looking gorgeous for as long as possible.

Coloured hair does need a little more care than normal hair. Change your shampoo and conditioner to a colour protect formula and add in a weekly treatment to nourish your hair as well.

If you have a darker hair colour, every wash can slightly fade your hair colour. Along with a specially formulated shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair, dry shampoo can help to space out the time between washes and preserve your colour.

Really high heat can fade your colour right before your eyes. It’s still okay to heat style your hair, but just drop the temperature a little to make sure you keep your colour looking its best and always use a heat protectant.

UV rays don’t just damage our skin, they can also damage your hair leading to colour fade. If you know you’re going to be outside for a long time, pop on a hat and apply a product with UV protectants to keep your hair looking its best all summer long.

Proven Secrets for Longer, Stronger Hair

Long, thick, healthy hair is a wish of many of our clients. And while we can’t create longer, stronger hair overnight, over time these secrets are proven to create fuller, longer and healthier hair.

1. Eat. Foods rich in biotin, a B-complex vitamin, are essential for promoting hair growth. Try to eat a palm-size serving (try almonds, eggs, and avocado) daily. Also important: iron, which oxygenates follicles (eat it at each meal; oats, spinach, and hummus are chock-full), and daily servings of protein (chicken, fish, beans), hair’s primary building block.

2. Deep Cleanse. Buildup of excess oil, dead skin cells, and hair products can create inflammation and blockages, causing hair follicles to weaken. Remove buildup with a purifying shampoo like L’Oréal Professionnel’s Serie Expert Pure Resource shampoo, focusing on the hairline as well as the back of the scalp, where buildup tends to be heaviest. If dandruff is contributing to the inflammation, we recommend Clear Dose, L’Oréal Professionnel’s single dose anti-dandruff cleansing treatment.

3. Stimulate your scalp. A five-minute head massage once a week will promote circulation, and deliver oxygen and nutrients that stimulate your hairs’ stem cells, for more rapid hair growth.

4. Pop some pills. Over the counter dietary supplements high in collagen, zinc and vitamin A are an easy way to ensure optimum intake of nutrients that promote healthy hair growth.

6. Thwart thinning. Genes, high levels of stress, and hormonal shifts (like post-pregnancy and menopause), can cause thinning hair as early as your 30s. The Kérastase Densifique daily scalp treatment is clinically proven to boost hair density & fullness by increasing follicular activity to reveal over 1700 new hairs in three months of treatment.

Highlights: How to Lighten Your Hair Without Damage

image via

As the temperature begins to increase, many of our clients start thinking about lightening their locks. However, aggressive chemical lightening can seriously compromise the health of your hair. To avoid damaging your hair, here is our guide to lightening your hair this summer.

Lightening Dark Hair
To avoid damaging your hair, lightening dark hair should be a gradual process. Lightening by one or two shades at each appointment will mean you’re left with better longevity of colour, as the condition of your hair will be left intact.

Lightening Light Hair
A great technique to refresh already naturally light hair is ‘babylights’. These are super fine highlights around the face and through the part line. Babylights look very natural and provide your colour with a lift while creating depth by maintaining the low lights of your natural colour.

Reds offers Olaplex, a premium hair treatment, as part of your colour service. Olaplex is designed specifically to protect and improve the strength and condition of colour-treated hair. Its unique formula multiplies bonds to make hair stronger and healthier, while your colour lasts longer, with more vibrancy – Ask your Reds stylist for details.

Because sun exposure can be just as damaging to your unprotected tresses as it is to your skin, it’s crucial for sun worshippers to think about regular sun protection for your hair. Make sure the products you regularly use have an SPF rating such as the Kerastase Soleil range. An at-home reconstructive masque once a week will maintain your hair’s condition and moisture levels and also help to maintain your colour. We love the Kérastase range, with a masque for every hair type.

How To: Soft Curls

Soft curls are timeless, romantic and seemingly effortless. Here’s how to achieve a style that frames the faces while remaining fresh and free-flowing.

Step 1.

13914048_618012155036653_1492650294021721740_o.jpgApply 1-2 pumps of Elixir Ultime oil to the lengths of freshly washed and dried hair.

Step 2.

Using a 2- or 3-inch curling wand, take evenly sized sections of hair and curl, starting 3 inches from the root.

Step 3.

Let the curls cool in your hand before moving on to the next section. For extra hold, apply a quick spray of Kérastase Laque Couture to individual curls.

Step 4.

Brush out curls with fingers spread apart.

Step 5.

Use a soft bristle brush to undo curls even more, creating cascading waves.
