Olympic Hair

While we’ve seen more hair don’ts than hair dos at the Rio 2016 Olympics, all this sport got us thinking about how we can keep our hair looking good when we’re out breaking a sweat. Whether you’re a dedicated fitness fanatic or just like to exercise now and then, here are some products available at Reds to protect your hair and keep it looking good.

In the pool

aqua-seal-main.pngWhile nearly all the Olympians we’ve seen have been hiding their locks under swimming caps, we’re sure all that chlorine is wreaking havoc with their hair. For those of us who love to swim Kérastase has developed Aqua-Seal, a fantastic product to protect your hair from pool chemicals.

Nearly as good as those Olympic swim caps, Aqua-Seal coats each individual strand with its specially designed waterproof protective barrier, keeping your hair soft and your colour vibrant.

On the run

The wind and sun here in Wellington can be particularly harsh, meaning that runners havehuile-lactee-main.png to battle to maintain healthy hair. For hair sensitised by exposure to the elements, Kérastase has developed the Soleil range of products.

The Soleil range brings dry and frizzy hair under control, keeping your hair smooth and soft without weighing it down. To protect your hair from the UV rays Kérastase has developed Huil Lactée, a protective UV mist to protect sun exposed hair, perfect for sun worshippers.

In the gym

Apart from a total overload of hair clips and sparkly scrunchies, most of the gymnastic competitors’ hairstyles have been limited to the predictable but oh so practical ponytail. Even when we do sport a ponytail, a common hair complaint at the gym is sweaty, frizzy hair, which has to be re-washed and re-blow dried after each workout.

To prevent this post workout frizz, we love the Kerastraight Smoothing system, which keeps your hair smooth, meaning no need to re-wash and blow dry, cutting down your post workout change time.

Available at Reds, these products and services will keep your hair looking great, whether you’re a professional athlete or just a weekend sportsperson. Ask your stylist for your personalized workout regime hair tips.

The Art of Dry-Styling: Go Longer Without Washing Your Hair

Perfect for those who prefer to wash their hair more infrequently, our dry-styling guide will help you to go for up to a week between washes.

If you want to wash your hair more infrequently the first rule is to use product sparingly. The second rule is to use the right products. Kérastase’s new L’Incroyable Blow Dry, a re-shapable heat lotion that lets your restyle without getting sticky, is our number one dry-styling product.

Days 1-3

After washing your hair at night apply Kérastase L’Incroyable to wet hair and allow to air dry over night. With a slept-on base of L’Incroyable, you’ve already got some shape with very little effort. If some of the bends are going the wrong way, help them out a little bit with water and your fingers or a curling iron. To stop your hair falling flat through the day spray some dry shampoo at the roots (Kérastase Powder Bluff is great for oil reduction, without the grit of some sprays), and your choice of light hold hairspray if you think you need it. If you’d like more texture, loosely coil sections of the hair around a heated barrel and then pin in place with metal clips. Let cool all the way to set, then release.

Days 2-5

An up-do is a great option for days 2-5 because your hair will have a little more product in and the style will hold better. We recommend a super easy top knot. To do, simply brush your hair loosely to the crown on your head. Twist your hair into a loose knot and secure with bobby pins. Give your style a quick spray of hairspray to hold it in place.

Days 6-7

Because you haven’t washed for a few days, you will be able to work with your natural oils for a shiny and smooth blow out. Apply Kérastase Spray á Porter, flip your head over and blow dry your hair smooth with a flat paddle brush. To finish, spritz your paddle brush with a spray oil like Kérastase Elixir Ultime Volume Beautifying Oil Mist, running over the hairline and the ends, coaxing them into a more controlled bend.

Work your blow out it for as long as it looks good, then wash it out and start all over again.

How To: Long Lasting Frizz-Control Blow Wave

This warm and damp weather can wreak havoc with your style. When it’s humid its not just the blowdryer or straightener needed to smooth out frizz, but also prepping and product to preserve your do. Here is a step by step on how to control the frizz and enjoy a long-lasting blow-dry.

  1. Prep damp, towel dried hair with a hydrating smoothing oil like Kérastase Sêrum Oléo-Relax.
  2. Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 4.02.51 pmSection off your fringe or the front pieces that frame your forehead (width distance temple to temple). Using a round brush smooth this section away from your forehead gliding the dryer along the top of the hair to seal and smooth. ( The key here is to point the nozzle not directly on the hair to dry, but to let it rest slightly above the hair. Doing this will allow you to control the hair creating a smooth and sleek look.)
  3. Continue with the front section and wind it into a tight coiled bun. Clip and leave to set.
  4. Next section off  hair on your right and left side. If you need to create smaller sections within these sections you may do so.
  5. Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 4.04.22 pmStart with either side and smooth both sides using your round brush gliding the blowdryer slightly above the hair. With your round brush direct and blow the hair toward the face. This will help create volume at the root as well as create a equally balanced look and smoothness for both sides.
  6. After your sides are smooth. Work your way to the back of your head. Here create two horizontal sections. Clip top section and tuck away.
  7. Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 4.06.51 pmStart with the bottom half and section into two vertical sections. Using the round brush smooth each section bringing the hair towards the face when blowdrying. (Continue step 8 for other sections.)
  8. Once you’ve reached the last section (top of the head) continue the same smoothing technique, styling everything forward (towards the face).
  9. Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 4.08.16 pmWhen you’ve completed smoothing out hair. Gently blow warm air across the top of the head to tuck away any baby hairs (the key here is to not blow directly on the scalp but to hold the dryer at an angle. Use the palm of your hand and fingers (faceup) to comb through the hair from the scalp while drying. This will help control the hair and tuck away those stubborn baby hairs).
  10. Now remove clip from first section, unwinding it split in half or your desired part.
  11. Screen Shot 2016-02-29 at 4.09.09 pmPolish off your frizz free blow-dry with a finishing humidity spray. This will preserve a long-lasting sleek look. We love L’Oréal Professionnel Fix Anti-Frizz

Party Braid How To

Screen Shot 2015-12-21 at 12.10.36 pm
Here are the steps to getting your own version of the Tuck and Cover French Braid Half with a Bun, whew!
  1. Begin with a side part on the right side of the head.
  2. Divide out a section of hair at the top of the hair, about an inch back from the hairline.
  3. Pin this section out of the way.
  4.  Grab your favourite stretchy headband and place it in the part created by the pinned off section, tugging it down toward the base of the head to secure it on the head. *If your headband doesn’t stay down tight, it can still work since the finished hairstyle will help hold it in place.
  5.  Let down the pinned section so it lays over the top of the headband.
  6. Take a section of hair, on the heavy side of the part, and divide it into two pieces, front and back.
  7. Grab a third piece of hair on the backside of the headband, creating the three strands to begin a braid.
  8. Cross the back strand over the middle.
  9. Cross the front strand over the middle, creating the first stitch of a regular braid.
  10. Cross the back strand over the middle and add in a section of hair from the backside of the headband, as the beginning of a french braid.
  11. Repeat step 10 with the front piece, continuing the french braid.
  12. Continue braiding a french braid, over the top of the headband, until it reaches the back of the left ear.
  13. Take the braid and tuck it into the headband creating the first tuck and the “tuck and cover.”  **If the braid falls loose, secure the tuck with a few hair pins.
  14. With the tail left sticking down, grab another section of hair next to it and tuck it once more around the hair band.
  15. Switch to the right side of the head and tuck a section of hair, near the front of the face, around the headband.
  16. Add another section of hair to the tail and tuck it once more into the headband.
  17. Tuck two more sections of hair around the headband or until the entire headband is hidden by hair.
  18. Combine the remaining hair and twist it around so it is all together.
  19. Wrap the twist, in a clock-wise motion, into a donut shape.
  20. Pin the bun in place with hair pins around the edges, hiding them beneath the bun itself.
  21. Gently pull on the sides of the bun to create a larger bun. This is important for the overall symmetry of the hairstyle.
  22. Set the style with Kérastase Laque Couture and you are ready to go!

In a perfect world we would have ample time to prep and primp ourselves pretty for the day. In the real world, we’re scrambling to get ready in the morning. Our motto is better to arrive late than unkempt, so try these 3 tricks to do your hair faster. Your mane will be thankful you did!

Sleep On It

Try suggest sleeping in braids. When your hair is still slightly damp from the shower, braid it into two loose French braids for loose waves, four waves for medium waves, or six braided sections for tighter waves. Finish the look the next morning in no time by applying heat from your blow-dryer or smoothing your flatiron over random sections. Unravel each braid and set the style with Kérastase Laque Couture to really nail those luscious waves.

Faux Wash

We can’t imagine how people got by before dry shampoo was invented. The right dry shampoo can do wonders to your hair; absorbing oils, creating volume, and refreshing hair between shampoos. Kérastase Powder Bluff will simultaneously leave your hair smelling fresh and give it mega-volume, in one hair flip.

Go Old School

While you’re rushing to brush your teeth, put on makeup, pick out your outfit, pack your bags, and a million other things, stop to set in hot rollers. Hot rollers are a super-fast and easy way to get a glam look in minutes. Carry on with your morning routine while they cool, then simply remove the rollers and brush out your mane for instant glamorous waves.

How To: Beachy Waves

Spring has arrived and while it may not be summer yet, it’s never too early for beachy waves, whatever the weather.

This look is easily achieved whether you rock long layers, a midi, a lob or even a bob (plus  it looks great for everyday or after dark paired with a smoky eye).

Here’s how to do it…

What you need:

Salt Spray

We love L’Oreal Professionnel Techni.art Play Ball Beach Fizz.

Curling Tongs

Before purchasing your pair, make sure you check out the size of the barrels on your chosen set. For thinner hair, small to medium is best and for thick hair, medium to large. Depending on how tight you’d like the waves, a temperature gauge is a welcome addition. The hotter you set the tong, the more statement the tousles.

We love the GHD’s curve series of wands and tongs. The oval shaped set offers more of a vintaged finished look whereas the rounder barrel creates softer, tumbling waves.

The key with tousled hair is to find the hairspray that will provide the hold without the weight. You want your tousles to be able to bounce so avoid anything too sticky. We love Kérastase Spray a Porter.

How to do it:

  • Wash your hair, making sure you don’t use too much conditioner. To create the best waves, you want your hair to be as light as possible so it’s not weighed down.
  • Once you’ve towel dried the hair, flip your head over and generously spritz your chosen salt spray all over the ends. This will mean it’s coated with texture but the roots have been avoided.
  • If you want a super natural, loose look – just let your hair dry naturally. However if you want more of a statement, voluminous look, roughly blow dry your hair, using your finger tips to create volume in the direction of the air.
  • Turn on your tong until it’s heated and section the hair.
  • For ultimate beach babe, take sections of your hair, varying in size and wrap around the tong holding for around 3-5 seconds.
  • Once the entire hair has been done, you can keep them tight or for boho glamour run your fingers through them, so they blend with each other.
  • Finish with a spritz of hairspray.

How To: Khaleesi Braid

If you’re into Khaleesi’s braids on Game of Thrones, then this inverted French braid will be right up your alley.

Screen Shot 2015-04-23 at 6.18.15 pm

1. Tease the section of hair along your hairline, using a comb to create texture. If your hair is really silky, get extra grip by using Kérastase Spray a Porter texturising spray.

2. Begin braiding. Starting at the center of your hairline, grab three sections of hair. Braid them underneath one another instead of over, like you would with a French braid. This is what makes the braid pop off your head, making it look 3-D.

3. Keep braiding down the back of your head, drawing in more hair from the sides as you go down and pulling the pieces tightly so the braid really pops.

4. Pull your plait over your shoulder so it’s easier to braid down to the ends.

5. Loop a hair elastic at the end and wrap a sliver of hair around the elastic band for a polished finish. Keep the sliver of hair in place by slipping a bobby pin along the back of the braid and into the hair tie.

6. Pull gently on a few pieces of the braid to build even more volume and then pose, because your braid’s done!

Finish with hairspray to keep your style in place, take a selfie, and then pin, Instagram, and tweet out your sexy new ‘do.

Five On-Trend Ways to Wear Your Hair Down

In a style rut? Try out these on-trend ideas for ways to wear your hair down.

1. Crimped Waves

Get Beyonce-like tousled tresses by braiding your hair in two French braids when it’s damp before you go to sleep. Then, when you get up in the morning, take out your braids for perfectly crimped waves. Top it with a headpiece or a headband for the complete look.

2. Bandana

For a cute, quick style, tie a bandana around your head with the tie in the front.

3.Beachy Waves

Let your hair air-dry naturally for the perfect boho look. If your hair doesn’t dry wavy, add more texture into the mix by flipping your head over and applying Kérastase Spray A Porter texturing spray all over.

4. Try a Turban

For a cute alternative to a headband or hat, try a turban instead.

5. Sleek and Stylish

Sure, this look seems super-simple, but paired with the perfect hat, it screams, “music festival-must.” To get Solange’s look, use a straight styler to straighten your hair, but don’t stress about making it perfect. This look is about being sleek yet effortless, so leave a few kinks here and there.
