Our Top 3 Tips for Dealing With Oily Hair

1. Choose your shampoo and conditioner carefully

First off, it’s essential to select your shampoo and conditioner carefully. Avoid any shampoos and conditioners designed for dry hair.  These products are often too heavy for oily-prone hair and may cause your hair to become dull and oily looking. Instead look for a product designed to add strength while not weighing your hair down. We love KEVIN.MURPHY’s Balancing Wash, an antioxidant rich shampoo for everyday washers that strengthens the hair and protects against colour fade. A fresh blend of botanicals makes this the perfect daily shampoo for hair strength and vitality.

 2. Add a purifying shampoo to your beauty arsenal

If you suffer from greasy hair, it’s likely to be because of oily buildup at the scalp. Consider using a purifying shampoo as this is a deep cleanser and will help remove any excess oil build-up. KEVIN.MURPHY’s Maxi Wash is a great detoxifying shampoo that breaks down fatty acids for a clean, clear scalp. The balancing essential oils penetrate the scalp to brighten hair and purify an oily or flaky scalp. It contains anti pollutant ingredients that remove build-up of unwanted products and chemicals. We recommend using a purifying shampoo on a weekly basis, followed with your usual shampoo and conditioner.

3. Don’t overdo it with the conditioner

When washing your hair, it is very important not to use too much conditioner as it can weigh down hair. Generally speaking, applying a 10 cent piece size amount of conditioner after two shampoos works best.

Pro Tip: Don’t use water that’s too hot when washing your hair as it will strip the natural oils off the cuticle and stimulate the scalp to replace it immediately, leaving hair greasy. Instead, use warm to tepid tepid water for your wash and cool water for the last rinse to add shine.

How To: Going Auburn

Screen Shot 2018-03-04 at 9.04.17 PM.png

image via Love Kevin Murphy

So what is ‘auburn’? We define it as a balance of red and brown hair tones. And the best thing about this colour is it can look great on just about every skin tone.

Light and dark auburn shades tend to look good on most skin tones, ranging from fair to deep olive. Auburn hair colour neutralises pink tones in fair skin making the skin look creamier, while light to medium auburn warms up olive skin making it look glowy.

Because auburn is a balance of red and brown, it’s easier to make the switch to auburn hair if you’re starting with darker hair. This is because when you lift dark hair, it automatically has red tones that shine through. The darker the hair, the more auburn you’ll see.

Transitioning from blonde to an auburn shade is easy, however, blondes have a harder time keeping the red and auburn tones vibrant. This is because the pigments have a tendency to fade quicker. Blondes who opt for an auburn shade should expect their hair to require more maintenance, meaning monthly glossing treatments to help keep the colour vibrant.

Not sure if you want to fully commit? If you’d rather dip your toe into the auburn tress trend, try out highlights for a gorgeous, multi-dimensional finish.

How To: The Meghan Markle Updo

image via Instagram/meghan_markle

Each time Meghan Markle has made a public appearance with fiancé Prince Harry, she’s opted for a chic bun, complete with a few strands left out in a fuss-free way. It has quickly become her signature look and so we decided to let our readers know how to recreate her look at home.

  1. This style is best suited to dirty hair, so the good news is you don’t have to start with an ambitious washing and drying regime. If your strands are too clean and soft, give them a quick once over with a dry shampoo or dry texture spray like Eleven Sea Salt Texture Spray over the root area and massage the product through.
  2. Then, lightly brush the product through to distribute the product evenly from mid-lengths to ends.
  3. To create the bun, tilt your head back and scrape your hair from the hairline back to the nape of your neck, securing it just below your crown area.
  4. Tie this up into a twisted knot and secure with bobby pins.
  5. An important part of this look is the shorter pieces framing the face, so loosen a few strands to get the modern edge that is required for this look.
  6. Finish with a finishing spray like KEVIN.MURPHY Session Spray fora firm, weightless lasting hold with natural fragrance oils and a UV shield for colour protection.

Our Timesaving Styling Tips

Instagram/lovekevinmurphy

Are your mornings feeling rushed? Try these easy time saving tips.

PREP THE NIGHT BEFORE

Not everyone is a morning person and the same is true about hair. If you have hair that’s stubborn and frizzy in the morning, start with prepping the night before. For a wavy, textured look, apply KEVIN.MURPHY Motion Lotion to damp hair. Braid your hair in two plaits and leave until the morning. In the morning shake out with your fingers and apply a little Bedroom Hair for soft and flexible hold. Hairstyling done.

WASH YOUR HAIR WITHOUT WATER

No time to wash your hair? Dry shampoos like Eleven’s Give Me Clean Hair and KEVIN.MURPHY’s Fresh Hair remove excess oil from your hair and scalp, leaving your hair looking and feeling fresh. The dry shampoo also doubles as a styling product. By adding a bit of texture to the hair, you can create a whole new look.

DETANGLE HAIR IN SECONDS

Dry, damaged hair is almost always the cause of hair tangling. Using a leave-in treatment like Miracle Hair Treatment will not only get rid of knots and tangles but also promotes healthier hair. Simply apply to damp hair and comb through.

KEEP YOUR HAIR HEALTHY

Healthy hair is always easier to style. Adding an effective treatment to your weekly regimen can dramatically improve hair health, leaving it more manageable. Eleven’s 3 Minute Repair Rinse Out Treatment is a blend of protein and shea butter to strengthen and hydrate hair. Simply use instead of your regular conditioner once a week and leave in for just three minutes to see dramatically healthier, more manageable hair. No time to rinse? Try KEVIN.MURPY’s Leave-In Repair to add strength, reduce breakage and replenish damaged hair.

How To Make Your Curls Last Longer

re_sized_ea574e0b2c674cd8acfd_KillerCurlsKM.png

image via KEVIN.MURPHY

We love beautiful, flawless, bouncy curls. But you know what’s even better? Beautiful, flawless, curled hair that lasts all day. Find out how to make your curls last longer with our five tips below.

1. Get Your Curls To Stay: Cool Them Down

One of the most effective tricks on how to get your curls to stay is to let the curl cool down and set before letting it go. Take each fresh curl (still keeping the curl shape) and secure it with a clip or a bobby pin. Wait till your curls have cooled before unpinning and brushing them out. Letting your curls cool allows the hair cuticle to close, making your curls last much longer.

Pro Tip: If you don’t have time to wait 10-15 minutes for the curls to set, pin them all to your scalp and use your blow drier to blow cold air on them from a distance.

2. Use the right hair products

Products designed specifically to enhance curls will amplify your hair’s natural texture and prolong the lifespan of your curls. We love KEVIN.MURPHY’s Motion Lotion which enhances curls while taming frizz. A light mist of hairspray after you’ve heat styled – we love KEVIN.MURPHY’s Bedroom Hair – will help to lock in your style for longer lasting waves and curls.

kevin_murphy_ad.jpg

Hint: Don’t hold the hairspray too close to your hair. A light mist will provide a flexible, natural looking hold.

3. Invest in good heat styling tools

Yes, good tools may be more expensive, but they heat up better (so you will apply heat for a shorter period of time), use technology to protect your hair while heat styling, and last much longer than cheaper tools. We recommend to set your tools at a heat temperature of 300-350 F to achieve an optimal curl.

4. Use the right barrel size

When using a barrel wand to create curls, many people think that a large barrel will give you those sexy Victoria Secret Curls. We find, however, that most of the time, a smaller barrel will do the magic. Depending on your hair, try using a 2.5 to 3.5 cm (1-1.5 Inch) barrel, and see what difference it can make! Not only will the curls look better, but they will also last longer.

5. Your hair still doesn’t curl?

This may be a sign that your hair is damaged. Overly damaged hair (including split ends) doesn’t curl well, as the cuticle is too damaged and can’t hold a shape. If you suspect this could be you it’s time to give your hair some love and get a trim! If you are worried about cutting your hair, let your Reds stylist know. Our stylists can offer treatments to repair damaged hair and are trained to work with you to achieve your perfect look.

How To Perfectly Style Your Fringe

20645362_1630219697012619_3527937488444096552_o.jpg

image via Love Kevin Murphy

While a fringe can lift your style from plain to chic, our clients often have trouble styling their fringe after they leave the salon. To avoid the most common fringe complaints, here’s our top tips for keeping your fringe perfectly styled.

Styling After Washing your hair

Hairsprays on fringes can make the hair look too stiff and unnatural. For a lighter finish, use volumising powder like POWDER.PUFF. For something with a bit more shine and control EASY.RIDER is a winner as it is a light weight anti-frizz cream.

Styling The Second Day After Washing

Dry Shampoo is always a hair saver for flat second day fringes. A few sprays at the roots will work wonders to bring back volume and texture. If your fringe tends to be on the more frizzy side, try a light leave-in treatment like STAYING.ALIVE. Spray your fringe lightly and blow dry in to replenish moisture and reduce static.

If Your Growing Out Your Fringe

Growing out a fringe requires patience and time. Hair accessories and embellishments can help to smooth out the process. Find a sparkly clip to twist and pin your growing fringe out of your face while you wait for your desired length.

COLOR.ME by KEVIN.MURPHY

1.     Naturally Derived Ingredients

Just like your body, your hair needs the best nutrition in order to thrive. COLOR.ME uses naturally derived ingredients such as Shea Butter, Honey and Aloe Vera to smooth and condition the hair shaft and scalp. Together, these ingredients act as a power team to moisturise, nourish, restructure and protect hair from roots to ends. These highly effective, natural ingredients soothe and soften the scalp and hair while boosting shine and strength.

2.      Rich in Antioxidants

Infused with antioxidant-rich Pomegranate and Rose Hip, COLOR.ME utilises the powerful effects of these superfoods to provide both UV protection and long-lasting colour results. These invigorating ingredients protect against environmental influences like heat and mechanical strain, while repairing and restructuring the hair from within.

3.     Ammonia-free and PPD-free

Many scalp irritations result from an allergic reaction to harsh chemicals used during the colouring process. COLOR.ME is composed without damaging chemicals that can aggravate the scalp and hair follicle. Instead, COLOR.ME is formulated without ammonia and PPD, and uses gentle ingredients to ensure the healthiest colour possible.

4.     Full Grey Coverage

COLOR.ME offers full coverage for un-pigmented, grey hair. The multi-tonal characteristics of each shade ensure maximum colour coverage and longevity, even on the most resistant hair. This high performance line delivers natural looking results to balance and maintain colour with unsurpassed shine, replacing unwanted greys with beautiful multi-dimensional colour.

5.     Environmentally Responsible

Always conscious of their environmental impacts, the water used to clean the production machines and colour tanks for the COLOR.ME formulation is treated by the manufacturers’ in-house water treatment plants. It is then returned to the water source where it was initially taken, even cleaner than when it was harvested.

6.     Cruelty-Free Colour

With the launch of COLOR.ME, PETA has expanded its designation of KEVIN.MURPHY’s cruelty-free hair care to include the colour range in its Beauty Without Bunnies program. COLOR.ME offers cruelty-free colour, and reflects the brand’s heritage and values in its initiative to bring awareness to protecting the environment and its inhabitants, including animals.

7.     Molecular Couple Guarantee

COLOR.ME uses the latest technology to ensure that every pigment molecule remains in a secure bond when applied to the hair follicle. This means fewer skin irritations and allergic reactions, and less harm to our environment. Additionally, COLOR.ME uses a specialised method to delay the oxidation process to ensure even application and optimum colour coverage. Our special micro pigments penetrate deep in to the hair shaft with minimal cuticle swelling, resulting in shinier, healthier hair.

8.     Multi-Tonal Results

Every COLOR.ME shade has been carefully hand-selected to deliver a unique and natural multi-tonal finish. COLOR.ME respects the natural colour pattern of virgin hair and creates multi-dimensional colour on every hair strand, resulting in balanced hair with exceptional tone and unsurpassed shine.

Hair Myths Busted

Screen Shot 2017-06-22 at 11.02.00 AM.png

image via instagram/jenatkinhair

Don’t believe everything you hear! Here we debunk the most common hair myths out there.

MYTH: Shampooing will make your hair shed

If you don’t wash your hair, hair that is due to shed will simply fall out somewhere else, albeit somewhere less noticeable. Washing can actually be good for hair growth as oil build up can cause inflammation and stunt hair growth.

If you notice more hair loss than usual, stress or hormonal changes are often the culprit. Try to reduce stress where you can and talk to your Reds stylist about the range of hair care products that promote hair growth and thickness.

MYTH: The more you brush your hair, the healthier it will be

There’s no value in brushing your hair more than you already do. In fact, over-brushing can damage your hair’s cuticle (that’s your hair’s outer, protective layer.) Brush your hair when it’s knotty or when you’re styling it, but otherwise, leave it alone

MYTH: Your hair grows faster when you have it cut

Unfortunately cutting your hair will not affect its growth. Hair doesn’t contain any nerve endings or blood vessels and can’t respond to things that happen to it. However, frayed ends can make your hair look thinner and cause breakage, so when you cut them off, your hair appears fuller and healthier.

MYTH: If I pull out one grey hair two will grow in its place

This one only seems true because one grey usually means more greys. This myth probably started because people plucked one grey hair, then noticed more afterwards. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but more silver strands would have surfaced no matter what—you can’t blame the plucking.

Still, that’s not a license to launch a full-on plucking war on your greys. Your hair will become weaker if it’s plucked too much over time, and it may eventually stop growing back. That’s not a big deal if you’re plucking here and there, but it will add up if you start going grey all over. Time to celebrate your silvers or book an appointment with your Reds colourist

MYTH: You can’t dye your hair when you’re pregnant

The main concern with dyeing your hair during pregnancy is the possible risk associated with inhaling the chemical ammonia and allergic reactions to irritants like Paraphenylenediamine (PPD).

At Reds we recently partnered with KEVIN.MURPHY to bring our clients hair colours that are free of Ammonia and PPD, and contain naturally derived ingredients like aloe vera, honey, shea butter and pomegranate, providing brilliant colour without compromising your health or the environment.

MYTH: Men inherit baldness from their mother’s side of the family

Many people think male baldness is a trait passed down from the mother’s side. However scientists argue you can’t blame mum for this one – multiple genes, from both mum and dad, contribute to hair loss in men.

MYTH: Colour absorbs better on unwashed hair

Colour always takes better on clean, dry hair. Product and oil build up can inhibit colour penetration, so make sure you wash your hair at least a couple of days before your next colour appointment.

How To Avoid Buying Hair Products You Won’t Actually Use

hair-mistakes-11-many-products.jpg

Nearly every woman (and man!) is guilty of hoarding unused and unfinished hair and beauty products that weren’t quite what we wanted. Here we check out the main reasons people are unhappy with their hair care products and the best ways to ensure you’ll love your next purchase.

1. It left your scalp irritated. Some ingredients, like sulphates, can dry and irritate the scalp, fade hair colour and even corrode and damage your hair follicles, which leads to hair loss. This is especially true if you don’t properly rinse shampoo out of your hair. To avoid irritation, look for products like the KEVIN.MURPHY range of hair care and styling products which are all sulphate and paraben free.

2. You didn’t see results. Most hair thickening, strengthening and repair products take a few weeks of treatment to achieve a visible change. After that, you see no change, schedule an appointment with your stylist to be sure your product is right for you.

3. You didn’t like its smell or texture. Playing with the product in-salon is your best bet. Your Reds stylist is happy to take you through the different products we offer and provide take-home samples. KEVIN.MURPHY also provides an online product matchmaker tool to help you find your perfect product combination—based on your hair type and your desired results—in just four easy steps. And as a bonus, KEVIN.MURPHY employs their very own French perfumer ensuring the scents of his products are absolutely divine.

4. You found something newer and cooler. Indulge your impulse-purchase habit with samples. Free take-home samples from your next salon visit will let you test-drive products and spring for a full-size version of something you love.
