He also runs The Green Salon Project, providing salons with practical solutions to reduce their energy consumption, carbon footprint and impact on the environment. Kevin Murphy: Hair Trends for 2016

kevin_murphy_s4-kare_kare_dps.jpg

These days there’s so many conflicting trends, reports and runway verdicts that it can be hard to nail down just what exactly we should be doing with our hair.

Luckily for us, hair extraordinaire and product whiz Kevin Murphy is here to teach us all the tricks and tips for hot hair in 2016.

What’s the one key to keeping your hair looking fresh and healthy in 2016?

2016 is the year of the haircut, in the past it’s been about the colour or the texture, this year it’s the year to think about the length of your hair. ‘Is my hair length cool anymore?’ is the question you need to ask right now.

Which haircut will we be seeing everywhere this season?

This coming season it’s all about the shag – loose natural texture with volume.

2015 was the year of the braid – and 2016 will be the year of…?

The cut! A fresh cut that enhances natural movement and texture.

What hair trend will we see the end of in 2016?

Natural looking texture (curl) and shaggy hair that has volume on top.

Will headbands really be making a comeback this year?!

Only when you have to pull back your natural texture, the headband makes unruly hair look acceptable, pulling frizzy or textured hair back makes a chic’er statement.

The s/s16 runways saw a lot of ‘wet look’ hair; will that still be a big trend this year?

I think that catwalks are more about fantasy than reality, we can take ideas from a catwalk but it’s not really expected that we would walk around looking like that. We might look at wet hair on a catwalk but we could interpret that as defined or separated look for hair for the street. Wet look may mean a making your product a little more prominent – and you need to have the complete look to pull it off, the hair, the shoes, the outfit…

What is your number one tip for staying on trend in 2016?

Be yourself (I know, personally, that can be challenging), Diana Vreeland said “get a look and stick to it”. Fashion these days is about embracing your own personal style, find what works for you. We can’t all be “it girls” and that’s okay but we should try and own what we have, embrace yourself.

Don’t stray too far from who you are naturally, in colour and texture, and you will look cool. Once you start trying too hard you lose who you are and then you become a stranger from yourself. Listen to Diana she knows best.

Kevin Murphy – Australasia’s rock star hairstylist

After seeing him in action at Hair Expo Australia, we’re more convinced than ever that Kevin Murphy is a creative genius. In just a couple of hours Kevin transformed the stage into a working studio for a live photo shoot. Showcasing the relationship between the hair, makeup, wardrobe and photography, his show left us inspired to apply what we had learnt to our own shoots.

Internationally recognised for his long list of celebrity clientele and countless pages of editorial work for high-end magazines, the Melbourne born hair stylist began his styling days as an apprentice in a Queensland salon and went on to train at the famous Vidal Sassoon in London.
