How To: Caring For Your Luxury Candles

They say that of the five senses, our sense of smell is the one that evokes the most emotional response, and is most tied up with memory. From freshly-baked bread to the smell of the sea, or just one whiff of a certain cologne, there’s no question that scent is a powerful thing.

For many of us, scented candles are a go-to when creating a relaxing ambiance to relax unwind. While often you get what you pay for – the luxe ones contain 10 to 15 per cent perfume oil, while the cheaper ones can be as low as one to two per cent – whether or not you love the scent is more important than the price tag.

To extend your burn time and get the best fragrance ‘throw’, here’s our tips for caring for your scented candle.

  1. To ensure an even and smoke-free burn, the wick should be trimmed to a length of 5mm each time before lighting and discontinue when 10mm of wax remains.
  2.  In order to get the most out of your candle, burn it until the entire surface of the candle melts. Wax has ‘memory’ so it will follow the first burn so make sure not to extinguish the candle until the whole surface has melted.
  3. To preserve the fragrance, do not burn your candle for more than six hours at a time and turn the wick into the wax to extinguish so that there is no smoke created.
  4. Do not leave candle burning unattended. Keep away from children, curtains and pets. Always protect the table or surface on which the candle rests.
  5. Ignore people who say scented candles make for a rubbish present – they couldn’t be more wrong 🙂

Stop throwing your false lashes away after just one use! If you struggle with justifying the cost of false eyelashes given their lack of longevity, consider this easy cleaning process.

What You’ll Need:

  • Tweezers
  • Two round cotton pads
  • A cotton swab
  • An oil-free makeup remover

    How To:

    1. Carefully remove any visible dried glue with tweezers

    2. Lay each lash on a round cotton pad soaked in oil-free makeup remover.

    3. Press the two cotton pads together for 30 seconds.

    4. Wipe away any remaining makeup using a solution-soaked end of the cotton swab.

    5. Lastly, go over your newly cleaned lashes with the dry end of your cotton swab bud.

This easy trick can make your falsies last for up to six uses. Give it a go and let us know how it works for you.

Fashion Investments: Designer Bags

We often talk about ‘investment pieces’, the things that will see your wardrobe through a lifetime.

Nowhere is this more true than when it comes to a handbag. A well-chosen one really can last you forever, and even become a valuable family heirloom.

The Hermès Birken

birkin-2Bman-2Bbag-2Bwhere-2Bto-2Bbuy-2Bprice-2Bonline-2Bebay.jpg

While a number of designer bags are considered collectable, none are more so than the Hermès Birken. Since its inception in 1984, the bag has been the ultimate status symbol when it comes to luxury accessories. The bag, which was named after actress Jane Birkin, can start at $10,000 and can go well into the hundreds of thousands. And even if you have the money to spend, some styles of Birkins require a wait list of up to six years.

And there is substance behind the hype. A new study found that a Birkin bag is a smarter investment than the stock market. Information collected by luxury handbag retailer Baghunter shows that Birkin bags have increased in value by an average of 14.2 percent each year and by more than 500 percent in the last 35 years. Compared to gold markets, which have fluctuated both positively and negatively, Birkins have only experienced levels of positive fluctuation.

Other coveted bags include:

The Classic Chanel Flap Bag

Screen Shot 2016-09-21 at 9.50.34 am.png

Not to be confused with the brand’s 2.55 bag, the iconic bag designed by Coco Chanel in February 1955 (the numerical name denotes the month and year of its creation). The Classic Flap is Chanel’s current Creative Director Karl Lagefeld’s contemporary take on Coco’s original 2.55, but has become just as, if not more, iconic as its predecessor.

The Célene Classic Box Bag

Screen Shot 2016-09-21 at 9.51.15 am.png

Celine’s former head of accessories Johnny Coca created a plethora of instant ‘it bags’, but none more so than the beautifully minimalist Classic Box Bag.

Debuted in 2011 the Classic Box Bag is an update on a much-loved bag from the Celine archives. The most notable changes from the original are the clasp, a simple rectangular gold clasp replaces the horse-and-carriage metal clasp that represented the brand’s former logo, and the flap has been lengthened.

Christian Dior Lady Dior BagScreen Shot 2016-09-21 at 10.24.32 am.png

The Lady Dior was created in 1994 with the sole purpose of becoming a classic – and it succeeded, helped along by Princess Diana who faithfully carried it for years.

The Prada Galleria Bag

Screen Shot 2016-09-21 at 9.52.57 am.png

Though officially called the Galleria by Prada, it is better know as the Saffiano Lux bag, after the leather it is made of. Loved for its roomy interior and simple, suitable-for-work design, it has become a true classic over the last decade.

Tips When Purchasing an Investment Bag

Although there can never be any guarantee that a certain bag will increase in value, there are ways to make an educated guess and provide the best opportunity for a higher resell value.

Hermes and Chanel are the two brands with the most consistent increase in price year on year. However, just purchasing the first bag you find without any thought or research won’t guarantee an increase in value a few years down the line. Here are the top things to consider:

 Colour

One of the most important considerations when purchasing an investment bag is the colour. While a bright pink bag may immediately catch the eye, that bright pink may not be fashionable in five years time. For an investor, a neutral colour such as black, brown, or gold has a much better chance of holding or increasing its value in the second hand market over time.

Limited Editions

Limited edition bags can provide an excellent opportunity for investment, but only if the right styles are chosen. When buying limited edition bags as an investment, find a style that appeals to the widest range of potential buyers as possible. While a whacky limited edition bag may look great, in years to come it may not sell as easily as a limited edition that features a special logo or stylish customisation.

Patience

One of the most important things to remember when purchasing an investment piece is patience. Take your time to find the bag you feel has the best investment potential and don’t expect an immediate return.

Maintain Condition

When reselling an investment piece, the most import factor in determining the resell price is the condition. If you keep your bag in pristine, excellent, or even very good condition you can expect an excellent return. However, if your bag is full of scratches or watermarks, you won’t get the most from your investment. If you’re never going to use the bag, ensure it is stored safely and properly and taken out of the box to breathe every few weeks.

How To Choose Your Signature Scent

perfume01.jpg

Perfumes and colognes can lift your mood, evoke memories, and just simply help you smell really good. Today, thanks to new marketing, new brands, and designer lines, there are literally thousands of different perfumes and colognes available on the market. So how do you know which scent will be the best fit for you? Here are some tips on how to choose the perfect scent.

Choosing a Scent

Each perfume or cologne consists of different ‘notes’. These notes determine the overall scent. These notes consist of three different layers, called base, top, and middle notes. Each of these notes work in synergy to create a specific smell. Some perfumes, for example would be considered floral and contain different scent notes like rose, gardenia, or geranium. Others may be a bit fruitier, with undertones of citrus or apple. Exotic perfumes contain spicy notes like star anise or even cinnamon. Men’s scents have various notes as well. Musk scents have a heavier, more masculine tone, while others may have smells like pine or even leather. It is always a good idea to determine which types of cologne or perfume you prefer and then see which base notes they contain before making a purchase decision.

Choose a Concentration

Fragrances come in four different levels of concentration. As the concentration gets higher, the price usually gets higher as well. Typically, colognes or perfumes with high concentration have a more powerful scent and last longer. They can be a bit pricey, but some people feel the higher price is absolutely worth it. The highest concentration is simply called perfume or parfum. This level should last all day with just one application to the wrists or pulse points. The next level is eau de parfum, which typically lasts about six hours after application. The third level is called eau de toilette. An eau de toilette is usually more affordable and typically requires more than one application throughout the day. The fourth and lowest fragrance concentration is eau de cologne, which only lasts about two hours.

It’s also useful to note that while the difference between eau de toilette and eau de parfum was once mostly about concentration, these days the reinterpretation by type might mean each possibly has a quite different aroma – so it pays to try before you buy.

Test the Fragrance

Before you decide to purchase any fragrance, you should try a few simple tests to make sure the scent is right for you. First, take a simple sniff of the bottle first to get a general idea of what it smells like. Secondly, and most importantly, try a bit of the fragrance on your skin. Our skin has its own unique combination of hormones and pheromones that react with fragrances and alter the way a fragrance smells. It’s a good idea to spray a small amount on your wrists, wait a few moments, and then smell the scent on your skin. Sometimes, depending on your own chemical makeup, it can enhance or diminish the smell. It can also be altered if you have a certain chemistry that does not match the scent’s mixture. Lastly, after applying the scent, leave the store and allow the fragrance to dry on your skin, and then seek a second or third opinion.

Wearing your New Fragrance

In applying fragrance, remember 80 per cent of body heat is lost through the upper regions, so apply fragrance lower down for greater staying power and to keep away from sun-strike areas. Try application below the breast bone, on the ribs or tummy area, to the thighs and behind the knees. Remember that fragrance molecules rise, so don’t spray in the air and walk through the cloud, leave this to the movies.

Glastonbury Hair 2016

With Britain’s famously wet summers, most festival-goers have stuck to the tried and tested uniform of undone hair, Hunter gumboots, short shorts, oversized knitwear, and massive jackets. After all, it’s important to make sure that you have something you could use as a raft if the rain comes back. Here are some of our favourite fashion and hair looks from the 2016 festival.

The Creator of the Iconic Beehive Dies at 98

fqkszjeswdcbj2yuilf5.jpg

A legendary stylist is with us no more: Margaret Vinci Heldt, confirmed creator of the beehive, has died at age 98.

Big up-dos and sculpted hair styles weren’t new, but Heldt is credited with the beehive proper. According to her obituary in the Chicago Sun-Times, she was already well-known when she created the famous look, having won the 1954 National Hairdresser of the Year Competition.

Modern Beauty Shop Magazine asked Mrs Heldt to develop a fresh and exciting style. Inspired by the shape of a favourite Fez hat, she developed the beehive. Mrs. Heldt revisited her creative process with in 2012:

“I thought, ‘What am I going to do that hasn’t been done before?!’ So I went home, took out my mannequin, and started playing. I remembered a little hat I owned, sort of a fez, which was really popular with Jackie O., and really loved it. I’d always thought, ‘Someday I’m going to invent a hair style that’s going to fit right under that little hat.’ Then, I realised, that’s exactly what I should do for the photo shoot!”

The style quickly became the defining look of its era and remains an influence on hair styling today. “I had no idea back then it would still be around” Heldt told the Chicago Sun Times in 1991. “This is so much fun.”
